ARTIST STATEMENT:

Safe Little World takes in a wide range of concepts about the worlds we create to give ourselves a sense of security. The concept is paradoxical in that, on one hand, our little worlds are comfortable, warm and necessary, but on the other hand are perhaps fragile and not absolutely safe.

Juxtaposition and paradox are important. While the concept isn’t limited geographically, New Zealand embodies the Safe Little World paradox – a quiet little island nation on the edge of the world, where suburban constructs have been built on what is otherwise often an inhospitable landscape.

The Safe Little World concept is evident not just in the subject matter of my work but also in the elements. I have an interest in creating things on a small scale, and utilise such things as childhood toys and past-times in my artworks. Playfulness and joy are important amongst the more cerebral considerations.
